What is psychotherapy and counseling?

In my early professional years I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for his own personal growth?
— Carl Rogers, On Becoming a Person

What is Psychotherapy and Counseling?

Counseling and psychotherapy can provide an opportunity to be in a safe space where you can be listened to by someone who is unbiased and non-judgmental. By sharing your story and your experiences, and building trust and openness in the relationship with your therapist, we can attempt to gain a deeper understanding and insight.

As humans, when faced with struggles, we develop strategies and coping mechanisms in order to survive. Sometimes, these strategies can become stuck and therapy can provide a space where they can be reexamined for their value and purpose. With this, also arises a heightening of self-awareness that can help in preventing old patterns from becoming habitual again. It is an opportunity to look at how you operate in this world and how you relate to yourself and others in the world. This helps in understanding your beliefs and values, your choices and perspectives, and how they inform your experiences. It is a chance to see whether a new way of being is possible which can be brought about by identifying the issues and gaining new perspectives.

This process takes time and commitment but is an investment in your growth and personal development. When life gets hectic and there are too many challenges to face at once, therapy can provide space to take a step back and reassess your priorities and help the emotional process that comes with these changes.
